Approval of the Zone 41 Nááts'ı̨hch'oh Amendment to the Sahtú Land Use Plan

Approval of the Zone 41 Nááts'ı̨hch'oh Amendment to the Sahtú Land Use Plan

The Sahtú Land Use Planning Board received notification today, June 4th, 2024, that the Minister of Northern Affairs Canada has approved the Zone 41 Nááts'ı̨hch'oh Amendments to the Sahtú Land Use Plan.  This is the final approval to the Amendment, after approvals by the Sahtú Secretariat Incorporated (April 3, 2019) and the Government of the Northwest Territories (June 7, 2019).

As these amendments have been awaiting approvals for many years, the Sahtú Land Use Planning Board had worked on other items, such as the 5-Year Review of the Sahtú Land Use Plan ("SLUP"), which received final approval in June 7, 2023.  The current version of the approved SLUP is therefore from June 7, 2023.  Therefore, the Sahtú Land Use Planning Board is working with Approving Parties on a way to accommodate the Zone 41 Nááts'ı̨hch'oh Amendments into the current version of the SLUP, as the amendment package was based on the 2013 version of the SLUP.

Based on the issue described above, the Sahtú Land Use Planning Board will be working with Approving Parties over the coming months to incorporate the Zone 41 Nááts'ı̨hch'oh Amendments into the current version of the SLUP.  While these amendments are legally binding as of June 4th, 2024, it is not expected that a new version of the land use plan that incorporates these amendments be released until the end of 2024.

In the meantime, Sahtú Land Use Planning Board staff will be working on creating a new zoning map that incorporates these changes.  In the coming days, the webmap will be updated and a new zoning map will be available for download.

Máhsı to everyone who has participated in the Sahtú Land Use Planning Board's activities that lead to these Amendments being approved, especially community members who provided their valuable insight and knowledge of the land.
