Update to Sahtú Land Use Plan- Nááts'ı̨hch’oh Amendment

Dear Planning Partners,

As you may already be aware, the Zone 41- Nááts'ı̨hch’oh Amendments to the Sahtú Land Use Plan received its final approval from the Government of Canada on June 4, 2024.  This marked an important milestone, as work started on this amendment in 2015 following the creation of the Nááts'ı̨hch’oh National Park Reserve of Canada in December 2014.  Both the Sahtú Secretariat Incorporated and the Government of the Northwest Territories had approved the amendment in 2019.  In the meantime, the Sahtú Land Use Planning Board continued working on other items, including its 5-Year Review and updated land use plan, which was approved and released in 2023.

What does this mean and next steps

The Sahtú Land Use Planning Board is currently working on incorporating the Nááts'ı̨hch’oh Amendments into the Sahtú Land Use Plan, all while working with Approving Parties to ensure that these are accurately reflected.  Close work with Approving Parties is required as the Nááts'ı̨hch’oh Amendment package is based on the 2013 Sahtú Land Use Plan, and not the current 2023 Sahtú Land Use Plan.

The Sahtú Land Use Planning Board anticipates that the updated Sahtú Land Use Plan that reflects the Nááts'ı̨hch’oh Amendment package will be released to the public in September 2024.  While there is a delay in updating the Sahtú Land Use Plan, these amendments have been in effect since June 4, 2024.  The new webmap on the mainpage of the Sahtú Land Use Planning Board's website reflects these amendments and was updated in June 2024.  Once the Sahtú Land Use Plan is updated to reflect the Nááts'ı̨hch’oh Amendments, updates to other documents will follow (e.g. Implementation Guide).

The Sahtú Land Use Planning Board encourages questions from Planning Partners.  Questions can be directed to the Sahtú Land Use Planning Board's Executive Director, Justin Stoyko at 867-768-2055 ext. 1 or exec_director@sahtulanduseplan.org.  Furthermore, Planning Partners are encouraged to consult the Online Registry for this file, where all documents and communication is posted: https://sahtulanduseplan.org/registry/file/am2015-01.
